PADECO under the FAO/FFF program continues to strengthen community resilience through nature-based solutions. Among these efforts is the development of water catchment and irrigation infrastructures for community-based forest and food gardens, especially in underserved and climate-stressed areas.
“The irrigation system support has ignited a wave of optimism to our community here at Luana ward! As we know, now days some of the water catchments here in Ludewa are perishing and farming yields decreases dramatically. Thanks to this remarkable system, we can now cultivate a vibrant array of crops, including fresh vegetables, even in the toughest dry spells. Our forest gardens are flourishing tremendously! This isn’t just infrastructure; it’s a powerful lifeline that’s transforming our community and paving the way for a brighter future!”-
Vintan Lugome, Secretary for Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) in Luana Ward based in Ludewa District.
Approximately 700,000 seedlings were nurtured, with 550,000 expected to survive and be planted to restore 495 hectares of degraded landscape, enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience.
The construction of water catchment and irrigation systems for ASH TECH and Luana AMCOS-Luana marks a significant milestone in PADECO’s mission to support climate-resilient landscapes and improved livelihoods. The facilities are expected to support the growth of over 350,000 tree seedlings annually and sustain food gardens serving numerous community members. The successful implementation reflects PADECO’s commitment to inclusive, community-driven development under the FAO/FFF initiative.
