CONTEXT
Globally, women and girls represent half of the world’s potential, yet they remain disproportionately marginalized. In the current labor market, women earn only 23% of what men earn, and without urgent intervention, over 340 million women and girls will be living in extreme poverty by 2030.[1] One of the most significant barriers to female empowerment academically, economically, and socially is the limited access to quality Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) resources.
In rural and underserved communities, the lack of affordable sanitary products often dictates whether a girl stays in school or abandons her education entirely. Investing in the empowerment of girls is not just a moral imperative; it is the key to unlocking a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
Why is Action Urgent?
The systemic obstacles facing girls in Tanzania are reflected in the following data:
- ACADEMIC LOSS: 20% of primary school girls miss 3 to 5 days of classes every month due to menstruation, resulting in a loss of nearly 45 days of learning per year.
- HEALTH DISPARITY: According to the Tanzania HIV Impact Survey 2022–2023, HIV/AIDS prevalence among women is 0.24%, more than double that of men at 0.11%.
- EMPLOYMENT GAP: Nearly 1 in 4 girls aged 15 to 19 are not in employment, education, or training, compared to just 1 in 10 boys.[2]
- SANITATION BARRIERS: The lack of proper facilities and affordable products leads to significant dropout rates, particularly in marginalized communities where teenage pregnancy and poverty further compound these risks.[3]
· Potential Partnership: PADECO AND HUST TANZANIA
In response to these challenges, the PADECO team represented by the Program Officer and Accountant recently visited Humble Unemployment Solutions in Tanzania (HUST) at their office on Nazareth Street in Njombe. This visit marks a commitment to support innovative, sustainable solutions for menstrual hygiene.
HUST is transforming lives through the production of affordable, reusable sanitary pads:
- ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: Each set of reusable pads can last up to four years, significantly reducing environmental waste compared to disposable products.
- ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT: The initiative creates local livelihoods through the tailoring and sale of these pads, enhancing household well-being and community resilience.
- HOLISTIC IMPACT: By providing a reliable solution to period poverty, the partnership ensures that girls no longer have to choose between their dignity and their education.
